French, 1855-1928
Ballue was essentially a landscape artist who painted in the environs of the Fontainebleau forest in Barbizon. He was student of Vallee, Defaux and Damezon. From 1875, he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon des Artistes Francais and received medals in 1891, 1911 and 1920.
After creating studies on location, Ballue finished his paintings in his atelier on the Boulevard Lannes in Paris. He was attracted to luminous reflections in water and dramatic lighting effects which are present in many of his paintings.
