French 19th / early 20th century
Flower painting in 19th century France has a rich and complex history. The most diverse styles flourished side by side as there were numerous schools of flower painting, ranging from academic interpretations to more free and painterly styles. At the Salon des Indépendants in the 1880's and1890’s much wall space was dedicated to flower painting, as two of the founding member's, Chapoton and Battaglia were full time professional flower painters. Scores of exhibitors would send one or two paintings and then vanish into thin air, with no mention of teacher or address. And flower painting was considered a proper interest for aristocratic ladies of the period. Hence, there are beautiful florals by obscure artists, such as this gorgeous floral by Dalon.
