Pierre-Nicolas Euler

French, 1846-circa 1913

A student of Jean-Marie Regnier at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon where he studied from 1860 to 1865, Euler revealed himself to be much more audacious than his teacher. Part of the important Lyon school of Flower painting, his work exhibits a lot of strength, solidity and a certain theatricality and sense of fantasy which is rare in floral still lives. He exhibited in the Salon of Lyon from 1872 to 1913, and in the Salon of Paris from 1895 onwards, showing floral and fruit still lives. He moved to Paris at around the age of 30 opening a "Cabinet de dessins", and then returned to his native Lyon in the end of the century, consecrating his work entirely to floral still lives. Euler was a member of the Societé des amies-des-arts of Lyon and was awarded medals at the Salon of Lyon in 1895 and 1904. Examples of Euler's still lives are represented in the French Museums of Anger, Clermont -Ferrand, and Montpellier. His 1898 work entitled "Saison des Violettes" is in the musée des Beaux Arts in Lyon.
