French, 1876-1946

Charles-Louis Menneret was a landscape artist who was born in Paris. He was a student of D. Royer, Guillemet, and Moteley. He exhibited at the Salons des Artistes Francais and Salon des Independantes in Paris.

Menneret is an example of an artist who has been influenced by the Barbizon School tradition of landscape painting, but whose work has incorporated the lighter colors and looser brushwork of the impressionist school. This subtly and masterfully lit riverbank scene is reminiscent of the works by the impressionists Monet and Sisley done on the banks of the little villages outside of Paris such as Argenteuil, Marne, and Vetheuil.
