By the 1950s, when our Study from Medieval Fresco was executed, Carl Holty's name had become synonymous with American Abstractionism and its large, soft-edged color forms that were incorporated with or floated on chromatic stains. A fresco, as referenced in the title of our example, by nature, was a medieval mural painting, and our work, with its overall colorful design motif does resemble a mural tapestry such as the Unicorn Tapestries that hang at the Cloisters in New York City.
